Different Types of HVAC Filters

Different HVAC Filters

HVAC filters keep the air in your home healthy and help your system run smoothly by trapping particles that can get re-circulated through your ducts. The type of filter you use can dramatically impact air quality. Here’s an overview of the different air filters to help you choose what’s best for your home.

Fiberglass Air Filters

These disposable filters are the most affordable and familiar but have lower Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) ratings, so they have a low-straining ability. Made from spun fiberglass reinforced with a metal grate, they protect your HVAC system but aren’t as effective at capturing air pollutants.

Pleated Filters

Constructed of polyester fabrics or cotton folds, pleated air filters capture dust and pollutants more effectively than fiberglass filters. They offer the best balance between cost and efficiency. The more pleats, the better the performance.

HEPA Filters

High-Efficiency-Particulate Air filters have the highest MERV ratings. They can screen contaminants as small as 0.3 microns, capturing tobacco smoke and bacteria, and are beneficial for those with allergies or asthma. However, they can restrict airflow, so follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for your HVAC system.

Washable Air Filters

Costlier upfront, washable filters offer long-term savings as they can be cleaned and reused. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and ensure the filter is completely dry before re-installing to prevent mold and bacteria growth.

Electrostatic Air Filters

These filters use an electric charge to attract dust and particles. They are more effective than pleated filters at removing allergens. Some electrostatic filters are washable, while others are disposable. Check the manufacturer’s guidelines to determine if your filter is reusable.
